If you choose an occupation listed on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List, you may become eligible to apply for the Subclass 189 visa. With this visa, you can live and work anywhere in Australia.

 

What is 189 Visa in Australia?

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is for invited skilled workers whose occupation is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). If your skills are in demand, you can live and work in Australia permanently. Eligible New Zealand citizens who have contributed to Australia may also apply.

The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa has three streams:

 

• Skilled Independent Visa 189 – New Zealand Stream (Discontinued from 1 July 2023)
• Skilled Independent Visa 189 – Points Tested Stream
• Skilled Independent Visa 189 – Hong Kong Stream

 

Skilled Independent Visa 189 – Points-tested Stream (Permanent Visa)

While the Subclass 189 visa is points-tested, recent changes mean points alone no longer determine invitations.
The Department of Home Affairs now uses a
four-tier invitation system,
where your nominated occupation and its priority level play a major role.

Subclass 189 is a points-based permanent visa. Applicants are assessed based on age, experience, qualifications, and English proficiency. Successful applicants receive Australian permanent residency along with eligible family members.

 

Subsequent Entrant on Skilled Independent Visa

Partners and dependent children can be included in the application before a decision is made. After visa grant, partners may apply under Subclass 309 or 820, and children under Subclass 101 or 802, depending on location.
